Request cost estimates for Veteran's Walk school field trips
Why now: On 2026-08-12 Chair Linda Lindsey said the proposal would require little funding, but on 2026-09-09 she presented estimated bus transportation costs and asked for Parks staff help, and no action was taken at either of the 2 appearances.
What to do: Ask the Parks and Recreation department for the bus transportation cost estimates Chair Lindsey presented, and compare them with her earlier claim that the program needs little funding. The public record never states who pays for buses or Parks staff time.
Act before: After the requested records are produced
Check how Veteran's Walk field trips affect downtown parks
Applies if: You live, work, or operate a business near the Hilliard Center or Sherrill Veteran's Memorial Park
Why now: Chair Lindsey proposed a walk starting at the Hilliard Center and ending at Sherrill Veteran's Memorial Park, with food trucks, public restrooms, and a Spring 2027 kick-off hoped for with T.J. Allen and George Evans Elementary.
What to do: If you live or work near the Hilliard Center or Sherrill Veteran's Memorial Park, expect school groups, possible food trucks, and Parks staff preparing public facilities if the walk proceeds. Ask the Parks and Recreation department how crowds, food truck placement, and restroom use would be handled.

Linda Lindsey presented item #2 for the record as shown above. This item was discussed at the last PRAC meeting in August. It was added to this agenda to provide additional information on the role of PARD staff and how PRAC can help to move this initiative forward. She stated that the Flour Bluff VFW has expressed interest in this initiative as an administrator and to raise funds. As a trial, Ms. Lindsey proposed T.J. Allen and George Evans Elementary as the schools to first participate in this endeavor. She hopes to kick-off the program in the Spring of 2027. Ms. Lindsey provided information on estimated costs for bus transportation and how the trips correlate to school curriculum. For each school, she asks that two PRAC members volunteer during the field trips. She also mentioned PARD could assist with greeting children at the beginning/end of the trip by providing promotional "give-aways"; help coordinate possible food trucks and prepare public facility sites. No action was taken on this item.
Chair Lindsey explained that this proposal would employ a collaboration with CCISD to conduct educational field trips for students to attend near the downtown/SEA District areas. She proposes that the "Walk" could start at the Hilliard Center with views of the USS Lexington Museum, move through different attractions and possibly end at Sherrill Veteran's Memorial Park. She feels these locations are favorable as there are centrally located with public restrooms and are amenable to food trucks for snacks. She proposed that VFW members could help facilitate these walks with their knowledge/experience. It would be a good opportunity for Veterans/Seniors to reengage with the community and promote parks. She believes this type of endeavor would require little funding. Further discussion took place regarding possible field trip schedules and how PARD would play a role. Chair Lindsey requested to discuss this for the next PRAC meeting in which she will provide further details.
