Council approves $40,000 for Fort Worth African American Museum

The Fort Worth City Council has approved redirecting $40,000 in previously allocated funds to support construction and building improvements for the Fort Worth African American Museum and Cultural Center.

The funding was originally approved in 2022 to help pay for a feasibility and site evaluation study for a proposed African American museum. Since then, the museum’s nonprofit organization has purchased two units of an existing building totaling about 5,000 square feet at 3100 and 3104 E. Rosedale St. in east Fort Worth, eliminating the need for the study.

With the site secured, City Council authorized a change in the use of funds to allow the $40,000 to be used for building renovations instead.

City leaders determined the investment serves a public purpose by supporting the preservation of African American history and culture, including the stories of African Americans in Fort Worth. Under the agreement, the museum must provide documentation of eligible expenses, and safeguards are in place to ensure the funds are used as intended.

The approval marks another milestone in the development of the Fort Worth African American Museum and Cultural Center, which aims to educate, inspire and foster greater understanding across the community.
