Fort Worth Park & Recreation will celebrate the official groundbreaking of the long-anticipated Bomber Spur Trail at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23, at North Z Boaz Park, located in the south parking lot near the dog park.

Mayor Mattie Parker and District 3 Councilmember Michael Crain will join City leaders, partners and community members to mark the start of construction on this new addition to Fort Worth’s trail system.

The Bomber Spur Trail project represents a major step forward in expanding Fort Worth’s growing network of trails, improving connectivity and preserving a unique piece of the city’s history. Once complete, the trail will provide a link for pedestrians and cyclists, connecting neighborhoods, parks and destinations.

The Bomber Spur corridor follows a historic rail line tied to Fort Worth’s aviation legacy. During World War II, the rail spur served the Consolidated Aircraft Corp., later Convair, supporting the production of B-24 Liberator bombers at Air Force Plant 4. Over time, the corridor became known as “Bomber Spur,” reflecting its important role in the city’s wartime industrial efforts.

“This project is about more than just a trail — it is about honoring Fort Worth’s history while investing in its future,” said Dave Lewis, Park & Recreation director. “Bomber Spur will create new opportunities for residents to get outside, connect with nature and travel safely across our community.”

The project is made possible through partnerships among Park & Recreation, Transportation & Public Works and key regional partners, including Streams & Valleys, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Texas Department of Transportation and project consultant Kimley-Horn. Funding support includes local, state and regional contributions, reflecting a shared vision for a more connected Fort Worth.

Once complete, the Bomber Spur Trail will feature a multi-use path designed for walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages and abilities. The trail will also include wayfinding signage, safety enhancements and connections to existing and planned trail systems.

Community members, partners and stakeholders are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
