At a work session on May 5, City Council was provided an update on the 2050 Comprehensive Plan. The CMO Planning Division teamed with its MIG consultant to explain the “roadmap for Fort Worth’s future,” which builds on but significantly extends the original plan that was adopted in 2000 and last updated in 2023.
The Comprehensive Plan establishes a community-driven vision, goals and actionable strategies and policies to bring about Fort Worth’s desired future. The plan will then guide Fort Worth’s growth and development for the next 25 years. Key elements of the plan include:
Land use
Housing
Economic development
Parks and open space
Transportation
Environmental quality
Arts and culture and more
Current planning work includes developing alternative growth frameworks. Next, the preferred place-based growth scenario will be determined with community input and presented, followed by a public investment strategy and plan. Transformative strategies and actions to implement the community’s goals will follow. The schedule targets the 2050 Comprehensive Plan for review, revision and adoption in the first half of 2027.
Through extensive community engagement efforts, including a variety of in-person events and online activities, the top community priorities have been captured. They include public safety, multi-modal transportation, preservation of open space, housing affordability, responsible growth and walkable mixed-use neighborhoods. The City also engaged residents with a “Reimagined City” personality quiz that determined resident preferences for the type of community that most appealed to them. Reimagined cities included:
Walkersville
Santa Ancho
El Corredor
Linkston
Polycentra
Downtonia
Greenhaven
Texanova
A virtual open house is launching very soon and will be available online through May as a follow-up to the in-person open house held on May 4 at City Hall.
