Texas Flood Awareness Week: Stormwater Strategic Plan

Texas Flood Awareness Week highlights the importance of knowing your flood risk and taking steps to stay prepared. In Fort Worth, flooding remains one of the most significant weather-related hazards, and the City’s Stormwater Management Program is using this week to highlight a major initiative: the Stormwater Strategic Plan.

Guiding this work are the Stormwater Mission & Vision statements:

“Protecting People and Property from Harmful Stormwater Runoff” and “To be recognized as an exceptionally progressive and effective municipal stormwater program.”

A program founded to address flooding proactively

Fort Worth’s Stormwater Program was established in 2006 by Fort Worth City Council in response to decades of drainage challenges, aging infrastructure and severe storms that repeatedly impacted neighborhoods across the city. The program was established in response to a devastating flood in 2004 that cost both lives and widespread property damage, to provide a dedicated, long-term solution for reducing flood risk and improving public safety.

Now, 20 years later, the City is looking ahead. The Stormwater Strategic Plan will reflect the program’s vision for the next two decades — one that emphasizes proactive system upgrades, modern engineering approaches, sustainable funding and strong community partnerships.

Resident participation is a critical part of the Strategic Plan. The City wants community input on drainage concerns, neighborhood experiences and priorities for future improvements.

The City of Fort Worth will hold a second public meeting to educate residents about the City’s Floodplain Management Plan Update and community flood resilience at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at City Hall, Mezzanine Room 6, 100 Fort Worth Trail.
