Fort Worth City Council authorized renaming the Hazel Harvey Peace Center for Neighborhoods the Southside Community Center at Hazel Harvey Peace at its Sept. 29 meeting.
The name change comes as programs and services from the former Southside Community Center, which closed Aug. 28, transition to the Hazel Harvey Peace facility beginning Oct. 1.
The move preserves those services while supporting long-term plans for the former Southside Community Center property, where the National Juneteenth Museum is planned.
The Southside Community Center will reopen at the Hazel Harvey Peace Center on Oct. 5.
A grand opening is planned for Oct. 7, coinciding with Ms. Opal Lee’s 100th birthday celebration and the symbolic start of development of the National Juneteenth Museum at the former Southside site.
