Also known as: BSZ

The Barton Springs Zone is a regulatory and hydrologic area in Austin, Texas, comprising the Barton Creek watershed and other watersheds that contribute recharge to Barton Springs, including portions of the Williamson, Slaughter, Onion, Bear, and Little Bear Creek watersheds lying within the Edwards Aquifer recharge and contributing zones. Development within the zone is subject to heightened water quality and impervious cover requirements under the City of Austin Land Development Code, and the City also maintains a Barton Springs Zone Overlay District intended to preserve Hill Country character and limit the scale and intensity of certain development. Properties in the zone that have on-site water quality controls, such as sedimentation/filtration ponds or retention irrigation systems, must obtain and annually renew a Barton Springs Zone Operating Permit administered by the Watershed Protection Department. The zone regularly appears in Austin city proceedings involving environmental review, site development, service extension requests, and zoning cases.
