Municipal Civil Service Commission

The Municipal Civil Service Commission is a City of Austin body established through a voter-approved City Charter amendment to oversee civil service matters for covered municipal employees. It recommends Municipal Civil Service Rules to the City Council and hears appeals, issuing final and binding decisions in cases where covered employees are discharged, demoted, suspended, placed on disciplinary probation, or denied a promotion. Its commissioners, including a designated chair, are appointed by the City Council, and must be Austin residents and qualified voters who are not city employees or registered lobbyists. Staff support is provided by the Municipal Civil Service Office, a division of the city's Human Resources Department.
