Historic Handley named in new revitalization cohort

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently welcomed Historic Handley, one of Fort Worth’s 12 revitalization target areas, into THC’s First Street initiative.

First Street is a year-long program that provides free educational and networking opportunities for urban neighborhoods and downtown districts interested in community revitalization who view historic preservation as a priority.

Historic Handley joins 23 other Texas communities who have also been selected to participate in the cohort.

Historic Handley’s participation in the First Street initiative will further the neighborhood’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its historic district by focusing on its unique assets and other community priorities. Local leaders plan to use the program’s training and peer network to advance projects such as support for the community’s small businesses, the activation of public spaces and the redevelopment of underutilized properties.

“We’re thrilled about Historic Handley’s acceptance into the First Street program, which will help lay strong foundations and build important momentum for the area,” said Phillip Michael Smart, the City’s revitalization manager.

“The First Street program aligns well with the City of Fort Worth’s community-led approach to revitalization, and we look forward to working with neighborhood leaders as they dive into the program’s educational events and other offerings.”
