Fort Worth Park & Recreation, in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, unveiled a Texas Historical Marker on April 1 honoring the Choctaw Code Talkers. The marker is located in Veterans Memorial Park, 4120 Camp Bowie Blvd., 76107.

The ceremony brought together tribal leaders, military representatives, elected officials and community members to recognize Choctaw soldiers who used their native language during World War I to transmit coded messages, giving U.S. forces a critical advantage.

“This marker ensures the story of the Choctaw Code Talkers is preserved and shared with future generations,” said Dave Lewis, director of the Park & Recreation Department. “Their service, ingenuity and sacrifice deserve to be remembered.”

Remarks were delivered by Nuchi Nashoba, president of the Choctaw Code Talkers Association and great-granddaughter of Choctaw Code Talker Ben Carterby; City Councilmember Macy Hill; Texas Historical Commissioner Catherine McKnight; Col. Brent Kemp of the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team; and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Chief Gary Batton. The ceremony also included a closing blessing by Assistant Chief Jack Austin Jr., as well as a flag ceremony by the Arlington Heights High School JROTC.

The event concluded with the unveiling of the historical marker, ensuring the legacy of the Choctaw Code Talkers will be preserved and shared for generations to come.
