Planners talk transportation needs in Fort Worth and the region

At the Infrastructure and Growth Committee this week, the City’s Transportation & Public Works Department and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) presented a short- to long-range capital programs accounting for mobility needs in greater Fort Worth.
Part of the efforts involve leveraging various modes of transportation to enhance safety and mitigate congestion. As part of the City’s ongoing work with the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Fort Worth Transportation & Public Works has partnered with Arlington to identify the best location for a high-speed rail station.
In 2025, the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington agreed to partner on a High-Speed Rail Economic Impact Study. The study was recently completed and presented to the Arlington City Council on April 28. A presentation to Fort Worth Council is forthcoming. The study accounted for high-speed rail connectivity to Houston, as well as a planned San Antonio-Laredo route.
On May 14 at the Regional Transportation Council meeting, the economic study will be discussed. Councils in Fort Worth and Arlington will be asked to provide direction to North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG )staff to advance both routes from Fort Worth to Houston and San Antonio to Laredo.
Next steps include further discussion about Fort Worth’s position as a link for high-speed rail corridors to include Houston and San Antonio-Laredo. NCTCOG will need support through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for the Fort Worth to Dallas segment.
Additionally, Fort Worth will work with NCTCOG in pursuing an environmental process for the Fort Worth to Laredo segment.
